Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History

Archivist


The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in Kennesaw, Georgia, is seeking an energetic and experienced individual for the position of Archivist. The Southern Museum, located 22 miles north of downtown Atlanta, is part of the prestigious Smithsonian Affiliations Program. The Museum features exhibitions that examine the importance of railroads in the region during and after the Civil War, a children's education center, and an 8,700 square foot research center and archive. The Archivist plays a key role in managing and processing archival collections, preparing collections for storage and display, and developing content. The Archivist reports to the Executive Director and primarily works a Tuesday through Saturday schedule.

Major responsibilities include processing and accessioning collections, preparing archival items for storage, producing finding-aids, developing related content, and providing support for activities associated with in-house and loaned exhibitions. The ability to function within a team environment of twelve museum employees is necessary as the Archivist works closely with the Director of Operations and Curator in planning and implementing collections policies, exhibits, and procedures. Interaction with researchers and managing the archival volunteers are further responsibilities of this position. The Archivist also participates in the day-to-day operations of the Museum and assists with programs, events, tours, and field trips, some of which take place after business hours.

The applicant must possess excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and have experience in archival management, PastPerfect, digitization, document and image preservation, and inventorying. The applicant should have a general knowledge of American history and a willingness to become proficient in Civil War, Reconstruction, and southeast industrial/railroad history. The ideal candidate possesses a master's degree in museum studies, history, library science, or related field along with three years of museum experience (candidates with a bachelor's degree supplemented by two years of experience qualify for consideration). This is a full-time, exempt, salaried city government position with benefits. The starting salary range begins at $44,509.15. Candidates may be eligible for partial relocation expenses.
