History Cherokee
Education Manager
History Cherokee (formerly known as the Cherokee County Historical Society) is building a new Cherokee County History Center and Museum that should be open in spring 2022. It is anticipated that the History Center will draw an audience of 20,000 per year. To learn more click here.
Cherokee County, Georgia is nestled between metro Atlanta and the scenic Chattahoochee National Forest with historic communities and multiple cultural and recreational opportunities. The Cherokee County School District is one of the top in the state and nation.
History Cherokee is seeking a qualified museum educator to oversee the educational interpretation of the collections and exhibits and establish a diverse and engaging calendar of programs for a variety of audiences at the new History Center. Working with the Collections and Exhibits Manager, as well as Museum Committee, the Education Manager will initially focus on implementing the new permanent exhibits for the History Center and corresponding group tours.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop an interpretive plan for History Center that includes educational school tours and summer camps that meets the Georgia Performance Standards.
- Collaborate with the collections staff to ensure accurate interpretation of collections and exhibits.
- Create engaging educational programming that meets the needs of the History Center's audience, including adults, families, seniors and those with special interests or needs.
- Manage and coordinate staff and volunteers to assist with group tours and educational programming.
- Work with the Marketing and Communications Manager to promote all programming events.
- Serve as a liaison with the Cherokee County School System to strengthen the existing partnership and collaborate on interdisciplinary programming.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in related field, such as Museum Studies or Education required, Master's degree preferred.
- Previous experience in creating and implementing innovative programming, both in-person and digital, for the purpose of connecting the community to local history and the collection.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience in public speaking, lecturing, training, guided tours, or other related experience working with the public.
- Friendly, helpful and courteous; must be enthusiastic about the tours and programs created and implemented.
- Ability to work with large groups independently and professionally.
- Ability to problem-solve.
- Desire to educate visitors about the historical significance of Cherokee County.
- Ability to work with diverse audiences.
- Ability to manage multiple, concurrent projects.
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff and volunteers in a team approach in planning and implementation of museum activities.
The position is full time, with some nights and weekend work required; telecommuting options available. As a small nonprofit, other duties may be assigned.
