The Morris Museum of Art

Windgate Internship

Opened to the public in 1992, the Morris Museum of Art is the oldest museum in the United States that is dedicated to the art and artists of the American South. The museum's mission is to create and maintain a collection of art that serves as a visual correlative to the culture of the South and to interpret that collection in regional, national, and global contexts. The Morris Museum of Art is a host institution for the Windgate Museum Internship administered by The Center for Craft, Creativity and Design. The Morris Museum is proud to offer this graduate level internship allowing students the opportunity to assist in the curation, registration and care of the Fleischer Studio Art Glass Collection, a new acquisition of more than 200 objects. During this internship, students will gain a general understanding of the functions of an art museum and will meet with museum staff to learn the specific organization of this museum. This one to two-semester internship, beginning in Summer 2019 provides 450 hours that can be dedicated to the new Fleischer Studio Art Glass Collection. The principal outcome for the intern is a thorough grounding in registration methodology and the direct, hands-on experience of developing a detailed record for a major collection that will have lasting value and utility. The candidate selected for this internship will gain extensive collection processing experience. S/he will create an associated acquisitions file for each object within the museum's glass collection and will have access to the extensive holdings of the Morris Museum's library, the Center for the Study of Southern Art. The intern will be trained in museum registration methods, fine art storage standards, collections management policies and procedures, and provenance research methods. Additionally the intern will assist the curator with research, preparation, and installation of the museum's new studio art glass exhibition.
