Hay House
Manager of Collections and Education
The Manager of Collections and Education is responsible for collections management, curation, education, and interpretive programs related to the museum functions of Hay House, a historic house museum and rental facility owned and operated by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, a statewide non-profit organization.
Reports to: Director of Hay House
Position type: Full time with Georgia Trust benefits
Qualifications: College degree in history or related fields with study and/or experience in historical interpretation, historic collections or archives preferred.
Compensation: Dependent on experience and education
Responsibilities:
- Acts as Assistant to the Director in curating the museum's collections and in the protection and the interpretation of Hay House's material culture.
- Responsible for managing, cataloguing, digitizing, and accessioning and deaccessioning items in the House collection, as well as managing incoming loans and donations.
- Keeps an inventory of the collections and databases of the condition of all objects. Assists Director in research and maintenance of archives, files, and databases of architecture, history, and collections of Hay House and digital documentation and oversees the storage and maintenance of current archival materials and documents.
- Plans, develops and fabricates new exhibits and other educational displays for the museum.
- Assists Director in the protection of the architecture of the house and necessary maintenance and conservation.
- With advice of Education and Restoration Committees, develops and maintains docent tour guide and all educational materials. Trains docents to guide tours utilizing prepared script.
- Along with Director and Operations Manager, provides staff support for Education and Restoration Committees, specifically including Collections subcommittee.
- Manages social media and assists Operations Manager in managing Hay House's official web pages.
- Plans materials for educational events, specifically including materials for Dinner Tours.
- Plans two annual Hay Days and takes educational programs to Children's Hospital, public and private schools, and other venues in fulfillment of sponsorship and grant requirements.
- Works as a team member with other staff on major Hay House events and certain larger rentals.
- Assists in event prep moving valuable collection items to secure locations and assuring their return to appropriate location.
- Works with Director to recruit and train a team of docents and/or rental staff on proper movement and care of collections when items are moved for rental events or other reasons.
- Plans, develops, and administers all school education programs including visiting classrooms, children's hospitals and other offsites.
- Acts as delegate of Hay House providing off site lectures, speeches and talks to local organizations on the history and activities of Hay House, as well as television and radio interviews and promotion, and promotional tourism videos.
- Plans, manages and administers specialty tours of Hay House including Behind the Scenes, Legends and Lore tours, and other such tours.
- Works with Director on periodic newsletter and Hay House column in Macon Magazine.
